Eye on Diversity Exercise: Finding Culturally Relevant Drug Prevention/Treatment Programs

Pick an aspect of your life that you identify with (e.g., religion, ethnicity/race, gender, class, or sexuality), and then find two programs for juveniles that focus on that social factor and juvenile drug use. When you pick programs online, pick two that are close to where you live. Examine the information that you find about each program and answer the following questions:

  1. What do the founders of the program see as the cause(s) of juvenile drug use? How can you tell? Do they base their perspective on any research? If so, what studies do they cite?

  2. In what ways do the program founders try to address the special needs of the population involved?
  3. As you compare and contrast the different approaches of the two programs, which do you think best addresses the factors related to youth drug use as outlined in chapter 10? What program do you think best addresses the factors related to the drug use of the particular group youth you are researching? Why?APA style
  4. To conclude this exercise, discuss what you think might be a helpful component of each program that is not there based upon your own experience related to the group you are studying. Explain your answer and consider the possible drawbacks of attempting to incorporate your suggestion in a program.
